Rolling dunes rendered in a monochrome bronze ordered-dither texture.

Dither Dunes

Rolling dunes reduced to ordered dither and a single hue.

THE STORY

A love letter to the Macintosh and Game Boy Camera aesthetic I grew up on. The source was a soft, smooth render of some dunes at dusk; the whole point was to throw almost all of that information away.

It's a true 1-bit image: each pixel is only ever on or off. The illusion of shading comes from an ordered Bayer dither matrix, the same lattice of thresholds those old machines used to fake grey on a screen that couldn't do grey.

Then I mapped the two levels to black and bronze instead of black and white. Constraints like this are weirdly freeing: when you can't have gradients, you have to earn every bit of depth through pattern.
